My Music Theory

As I have said many many times, and will surely say again I LOVE MUSIC! I honestly love any and all types of music. I am the person who gets excited about musical theater and is moved to tears by the symphony. That is just how I was wired and I don’t mind at all! With that being said I realize and accept the fact that it translates into the way I TEACH music. I started playing piano at the age of 5. My kindergarten music teacher would take me home from school with her once a week (oh times have changed) for my piano lesson. I enjoyed learning to play, but quite honestly I was TERRIFIED of my teacher! She was just really strict and expected a lot from me even at the age of 5. Was that a good thing? Probably so! It scared me into practicing and getting better however it did not foster my love for music. I think that probably came from chorus (ironically taught by the same teacher) but I loved the music we sang and singing was just easier I guess less work and less practice. Anyways, as a music teacher YES I want the kids to learn how to play the piano and play well. I want them to learn to read music and train their ear HOWEVER I want them to LOVE it! Not only is there nothing better than teaching a child who loves it but I honestly believe they will do better when they are doing something they love! I have been teaching this girl Lark for about a year. I was also teaching her older sister but Lark LOVED music. She eagerly anticipates my arrival and hates when the lessons are over. On days that her sister had to much homework she would take her lesson for her! Lark loves music and I love teaching Lark because we have so much fun! My goal as a teacher is to foster a love for music in all my students young and old!
